The lift in a push up bra comes from the cup. Padding, thicker at the bottom than at the top, pushes the bust up and towards the center, and a snug band gives the cups a base to lift from.

The best push up bra is the one with the lift you actually want. A lighter pad gives a little lift under everyday tops; a deeper, more padded cup shows in a lower neckline. Finding the right fit for your push up bra
The band of a push up bra should sit level and snug enough to do most of the supporting; if it rides up, go down a band size. Caring for your push up bra
Wash a push up bra cold, in a laundry bag, and lay it flat to dry. Heat flattens the padding that gives a push up bra its lift, so keep it out of the dryer.
